05-11-2026 - 5:15 AM - Good Morning! It’s Monday, and clear skies are in the forecast for today. Yesterday, we received some much-needed rain. I don’t know how much, as the “Water Data for Texas” website didn’t update yesterday, or this morning. I’ll check it again later. For me, it’s yard-mowing time, either today or tomorrow. Right now, my Folgers Black Silk coffee is ready!
--- 5:30 AM - NWS Forecast - Today: Sunny, with a high near 81. North northeast wind 5 to 7 mph. Tonight: Clear, with a low around 57. East southeast wind around 6 mph.--- 5:35 AM - NWS Short Range Weather Discussion
--- 5:40 AM - NWS Extended Range Weather Discussion
--- 5:50 AM - ERCOT (Texas) snapshot of grid conditions - ERCOT reports that conditions are normal and there is enough power for current demand with an operating reserve of 14,225 Megawatts.
--- 6:00 AM - CB Radio Channel 19 is coming alive with local traffic this morning. I heard one peep on Channel 1, which gets regular morning use in Wichita Falls. I haven't made an Amateur (ham) Radio CW (Morse code) contact in a few days. I'll look into that later. The Allred Unit prison is alive and well on 153.815 MHz. The school bus drivers are coming alive on 152.360 MHz. Tune in to those and more with your scanner radio!
--- 6:15 AM - The Wichita Falls State Hospital is active on 154.800 MHz. Tune in to their daily operations on your scanner radio.
--- 11:30 AM - According to Water Data for Texas, Wichita Falls reservoirs are: Arrowhead: 85.0% Kemp: 95.0% Kickapoo: 86.6%. Monitored Water Supply Reservoirs are 89.6% full. The City of Wichita Falls uses combined levels of Arrowhead and Kickapoo (85.8%) to determine drought stage.
--- 1:00 PM - Last year, there was a news report about National Capitol Communications LLC petitioning the U.S. Federal Communications Commission to assign "outdated or abandoned frequencies" in the 30-50 MHz band to the General Mobile Radio Service (GMRS) and the Family Radio Service (FRS). Frequencies in this range (46-49 MHz) were used for the old cordless telephones of the 1980s and 1990s, as well as small walkie-talkies of the type sold by Radio Shack. Interesting. I don't know what happened to that request, but I'm thinking no action was taken.
--- 2:45 PM - In the mid-1960s, ROTC students at Hirschi High School were invited to bring their 22-caliber rifles to school to be fired on the ROTC firing range. These rifles were stored in the students' lockers until their scheduled ROTC period. This means the rifles were carried through the halls to and from the range. Some students walked to school with their rifles and back home again. No cops were called. No damns were given. It was a very different time.
--- 3:00 PM - A decade ago, I was listening to the CB Radio Channel 6, the "superbowl." If you know about the superbowl and its primary participants, and you know about National Public Radio (NPR), you might understand my amusement when one of the “superbowlers”, during a quiet moment, said: "You're listening to NPR, Negro Public Radio."
--- 3:15 PM - Not too long ago, someone was keying up (kerchunking) the 146.940 MHz repeater one afternoon. A representative of that machine came on and offered to give them a radio check if that’s what they needed. When the representative asked the station for a call sign, the operator pulled some letters and numbers (in the wrong format) out of his ass. The representative told him that the call sign was not an FCC-issued one and that he should not be on the air. The kerchunker was not heard from again.
--- 4:30 PM - In the 1970s, Radio Shack wasn't the only place to find "electronics" goodies in Wichita Falls. Trice Electronics was located at 2100 9th Street and Wholesale Electronics was located at 1508 11th Street. In the 1977 Wichita Falls City Directory there are 15 listings under "Television Sets - Sales & Service".
--- 7:00 PM - Years ago, my wife asked me to help come up with a name for her arts & crafts group. My offering was L.A.D.I.E.S. - League of Artists, Designers, Inkers, Embossers & Stampers. Not being able to leave well enough alone, I offered an alternative name in case they didn't like L.A.D.I.E.S. - Bureau of Inking, Tinting, Collaging, Hot-gluing, Engraving & Stamping.
